Pterocarya Species in Iowa
A few Wingnut(Pterocarya) species have been planted here. Some are cold-hardier than others, while some continue to die back during the winters.
Wingnut Division
I have a young Hupeh Wingnut(Pterocarya Hupehensis) that has multiple trunks on it, so decided to dig out one and make a new tree. With a little care, this Wingnut division should grow into a fast growing tree.
Pterocarya Genus
I have been growing some species in the Pterocarya genus. The common name is Wingnut. The Hupeh Wingnut(Pterocarya Hupehensis) is a fast growing tree, but lacks some hardiness in plant hardiness zone 5. The Japanese Wingnut(Pterocarya rhoifolia) has been hardier for me. This selection came from Oikos Tree Crops and is a Korean seed source.
