Vernal Ponds suppose to dry up eventually, but the past couple of years this one hadn’t. Now that this year is drier, this one has completely dried up. It may be possible to even dig it deeper once the mud dries up.

Bathtub Ring
This Pond frequently has a case of bathtub ring. The hump in the middle is infrequently an island.
Sometimes an Island, Sometimes Not
There is enough water in this pond currently so that the island is completely surrounded by water. Though with little watershed, the water disappears eventually. I may remove the island in the future and dig this pond deeper.
Dry Iowa
Just as last fall was dry, this spring has continued to be dry. There wasn’t much snowmelt this spring, but some moisture has collected in the bottom of this pond, that was dug deeper back in 2012.
Japanese Larch Suffering
The Japanese Larch(Larix kaempferi) didn’t like this Summer’s drought and heat. They look beat up in August.
Cattle A Memory
The drought this year made it the right time to get rid of the cattle. Bye, bye cattle!
