Sometimes an Island, Sometimes Not

There is enough water in this pond currently so that the island is completely surrounded by water.

Though with little watershed, the water disappears eventually.  I may remove the island in the future and dig this pond deeper.

Bella di Giugno Pear

I grafted Bella di Giugno Pear onto an old rootstock pear.

It has started to flower more, hopefully soon it can set pears.   Until then, I can keep wondering if this is the earliest pear that I can harvest in Iowa.

Japanese White Birch Catkins

The male catkins on the Japanese White Birch trees are opening up this month.

They don’t last very long until they fall to the ground and some of the goats may eat up the spent catkins.
