My vernal pond attracted wood ducks this spring. The wood ducks used a nearby oak tree for a nesting hole.

Golden Bleeding Heart and White Bleeding Heart
There are a couple other bleeding hearts in the woods besides the one I mentioned in this blog. The Gold Bleeding Heart has the same colored flowers as the common Bleeding Heart, but with attractive golden leaves. The White Bleeding Heart has different colored flowers that are white instead of pink.

I have been busy building a lot of vernal ponds. It is nice to see little water holes in the forest where there was none before.
Snow Adds Up
With cold temperatures and little snow melting, more snow storms keeps adding to the snowpack. Ponderosa Pines(Pinus ponderosa) are getting buried under the snowdrifts that are forming.
Goat’s Beard
Goatsbeard is a perennial that flowers heavily and attracts a lot of insect pollinators to it. This plant prefers more shady areas and not full sun.
Bleeding Heart
The Bleeding Hearts are blooming in the woods. The Bleeding Heart perennial becomes taller than a lot of plants in the woods, so is very noticeable at this time of the year.

Tornado Lance
I swept through the forest like a tornado, quickly knocking down trees in a block of the woods this month. This has opened up the canopy, and will create a thicket for the wildlife to use as cover compared to the surrounding open woods.
