I built my first Vernal Pool in the upland of the woods. It suppose to collect snowmelt and rain runoff and will slowly dry up during the year. Because they end up drying up, they do not contain fish, so are attractive to things like frogs and toads. This is a good test to see […]

Too Attractive To Die
When raising goats, there are a lot of bucks that end up being born that will end up being eaten. So what better way to make them last forever than taking a photo of them, especially when they are this beautiful! In the background is a fast growing hybrid poplar I planted last year.
Green King Elm
The Green King Elm keeps on growing fast. I think it should produce a lot of shade for the goats in a short amount of time.
Iowa Banana
Growing Musa basjoo hasn’t been some amazing experience for me. Seems like it is taking off slow in my weather. Will dig up this fall and store it the basement and replant next spring. Possibly can be overwintered outside in my climate, with a lot of protection.
Backyard Island
I was busy mulching branches this year and ended up creating a mulch island in the backyard. The ducks like climbing up on the island and looking for bugs in the mulch.
Kieffer Pear Flowering
The Kieffer Pear has been reliable at flowering and producing a lot of fruit. This tree was bought as a Bartlett Pear, but was found out later that it was not. These pears have grit cells in them that make them grainier than Bartlett-type Pears.
Hinge Cutting
I have been hinge cutting some elms in the woods this month, opening up the canopy. This will bring more sunlight in and give some more cover for wildlife.
2004 Fall Tree Colors
Here are a few pics of fall colors of some of my trees: Baldcypress(Taxodium distichum) is one of my most reliable producers of fall color. This tree was bought from Starkbros as a Dawn Redwood(Metasequoia glyptostroboides) but was mislabeled.. Another reliable fall color producer is the Blackgum(Nyssa Sylvatica). The young Oriental White Oak(Quercus aliena) has […]
Black Walnut Victim
I am the latest victim of the Black Walnut tree. The nuts attracts humans and as a result we end up like this: Parts of my hand have been dyed black from removing the black husks.
Fast Growing Hybrid Elms
Well the hype was true, the Green King Hybrid elm I planted this spring has grown very fast. Now that the fast growth question has been taken care of, the main question is how resistant it will be to Dutch Elm Disease.
