Thistle Island
It has rained a lot this month, and right now this island is fully surrounded by water. Currently the island is covered in field thistles(Cirsium discolor).
Sunbathing
A snapping turtle and some painted turtles spend time sunbathing in harmony on a log. As I get closer, they quickly jump in the water and disappear.
Dry Iowa
Just as last fall was dry, this spring has continued to be dry. There wasn’t much snowmelt this spring, but some moisture has collected in the bottom of this pond, that was dug deeper back in 2012.

Island Meeting
The Canadian Geese have gathered for a meeting on my island. This is the reason I like islands on my ponds.
Stop Snowmelt
I have been building a lot of vernal pools. They help stop the rush of water so it can slowly absorb into the surrounding soil. This vernal pool is right above a permanent pond.
Little Work, Big Results
The Beavers were able to dam up a small area and created a big body of water. The beaver pond is around 2 acres in size.
Old Ponds Renewed
There is three ponds on this property that were cattle ponds. Now that the cattle are gone and drought has made conditions good for digging, we hired a trackhoe and bulldozer to dig out these filled-in ponds. The work went fast and was less than 2 days they were here.
Cattle A Memory
The drought this year made it the right time to get rid of the cattle. Bye, bye cattle!
