The Canadian Hemlocks I planted this spring didn’t seem like they would be this close to the water’s edge. Hard to tell where the water line was when eyeballing the dry pond this spring.

Not Meant to Be
The little dams I built throughout the woods suppose to stop the water and be big enough to not fill completely up, but I did not realize how much water can rush through the steep valleys. So I started building emergency spillways even for my little vernal ponds. This vernal pond is a good example […]
My Little Pond Network
I have a multitude of little ponds I built in a forest nearby the house. Today every little hole was filled with water, giving a nice appearance of a network of vernal pools, stepping their way down the valley.
Deep Reflections
This vernal pool has kept water in it all year. With all the rains, the depth has consistently been 6 feet deep.
Dry Dam
Some of the ponds I have lack water most of the year. They help stop excess water from the thunderstorm that just passed through here.
Sometimes an Island, Sometimes Not
There is enough water in this pond currently so that the island is completely surrounded by water. Though with little watershed, the water disappears eventually. I may remove the island in the future and dig this pond deeper.
80+ MPH Winds
Strong winds and hail hit during a thunderstorm on August 31, probably the most damaged trees on this Oasis in one event. Most of the Apples fell from the trees prematurely. To preserve the harvest, I have had to start dehydrating the fallen apples. Basswoods quickly were demolished. The large Black Cherry above was uprooted […]
Flood waters
The vernal ponds were all full of water from the 3 inch rain event on August 31. The pond worked on in the past post Old Ponds Renewed was at the fullest level of water so far.
Wood Pile
The hard rains have cleared the streams of debris from the forest.
Full Vernal Ponds
A lot of rains this year have filled up my vernal pools of water.
