Giant Miscanthus Grass
Giant Miscanthus is a large grass topped with spectacular plumes in fall. This tall grass can top out over 10′ tall by fall and is used for fast growing windbreaks, screens, and biomass.
Ornamental Grass Fall
Even some of the Ornamental Grasses can have fall color. Running Miscanthus always has a lot to offer in fall, with the foliage turning color and the many white plumes.
Rare Variegated Miscanthus
There are a few different rare Variegated Miscanthus cultivars. This selection is the only one with running rhizomes.
Common Reed
Common Reed has running rhizomes and is found in odd places. These shoots are coming up between the trunk and bark of an old, cut-down Lombardy Poplar.
Brome Competition
Brome grass has been one of the most aggressive grasses on the farm. Any plant that isn’t tall or vigorous enough will quickly succumb to its strength. There are some Ornamental Grasses though, that I have found out to compete well against the Bromegrass.
Variegated Brome Grass
Sometimes even common weeds get my attention. This stem of Brome Grass stands out with its variegation.
Iowa Phyllostachys Parvifolia
My Bamboo experiences have been mentioned a lot in my previous entries. I still have a few species still alive. This Bamboo species, Phyllostachys Parvifolia, is one of the hardier bamboo species. In my climate, it also dies to the the ground usually, even though it is on the south side of the house.
Iced Landscape
Some freezing rain has iced over everything on my Oasis.
Sun + Miscanthus
Miscanthus looks the best in the fall, when the large white plumes are shimmering in the sunlight. Some of the cultivars can get over 10 feet tall.
