Colorful Moths
Moths generally are boring in color. But I found these two colorful moths around the same time this month.
Tobacco Hornworm
There has been a lot of Tobacco Hornworms of various colors this year. They have adapted and feed on the Mirabilis genus, the same flowering plants the adult moths use as their food source.
Ailanthus Webworm Moth
Ailanthus Webworm Moth is a beautiful small moth. The larva stage feeds on Tree of Heaven trees in Iowa.
Wooly Worm
I found a lot of weird insects feeding on a Heartnut tree. They are known as Butternut Wooly Worms and are larvae of a sawfly.
Ant Opportunity
I killed a fly and saw that it gives birth to live maggots. Ants enjoyed the lunch they found.
Sumac Flowers
Smooth Sumac(Rhus glabra) is native to here and I also have planted Staghorn Sumac(Rhus typhina). These are Staghorn Sumac flowers and all the insects attracted to them.
Queen For a Day
Was sawing down some Lombardy Poplars. Found many carpenter ants inside, some were queen ants that were large.
