A young Moonglow Magnolia has held onto its leaves through the winter. I planted a few of these special cultivars of the Sweetbay Magnolia in the woods. They should have added protection in the surrounding trees.

Evergreen Cove
The deer like to hide in this cove in the valley. There are many evergreens in this area, the ones visible in this photo are Norway Spruces and Green Giant Cedars.
Iowa English Yews
I planted a Hungarian genotype of the English Yew. This selection suppose to be cold hardier than common seedlings and cultivars that are available. I’ve had some of my seedlings die from lack of hardiness, while others have survived the Iowa winters relatively well.
Snow Induced Evergreens
With a very late fall turning into a quickly, snow-covered winter, some plants kept green leaves under the snowline. Now with the warmer temps melting off the snow, I am seeing the green life.
Whitebark Pine
Dried sap on this White Pine has made the bark look white. None of the other White Pines were covered in as much of this white as this tree.
Frosty Spruces
A foggy day quickly created a frosty landscape. The evergreens, like this Blue Spruce, had a good covering of frost on their needles.
Return of Winter
Winter temps are below normal now. The lowest temperature has gone eleven below zero Fahrenheit and the snow is sticking around.
Opportunity Knocks
This year I took advantage of the storm from last fall, that knocked down trees. This is a uprooted Hackberry. I am using the depression as a moist habitat for a couple Canadian Hemlocks.
Greenery
I keep planting evergreens throughout the woods. I would have liked my bamboo to live and be one of the important evergreens, but so far only conifers are important here. Owls like the winter habitat I am creating for them.
Close But Safe
The Canadian Hemlocks I planted this spring didn’t seem like they would be this close to the water’s edge. Hard to tell where the water line was when eyeballing the dry pond this spring.
